The Benefits Of Buying Used Farm Tractors

In today’s economy, it is imperative that we all save money. Farmers in particular have been hit the hardest over the past few decades, and because of this they are always on the lookout for a good deal. Tractors are an essential part of a farmer’s equipment and they don’t come cheap-which is why the market for used tractors is booming.

So you’re in the market for a used tractor, where do you look? There is of course the old stand-by-the classified ads. The classifieds in your local newspaper is certainly one option, but these days it is very limited. With the advent of the internet, you can now look for used tractors worldwide. A quick search on your favorite search engine will turn up plenty of dealers willing to sell you a used tractor, but you first need to make sure you know what you’re getting into. Avoid sites that charge you hidden fees, over time, these could add up so much that you’d be better off buying a new tractor. Selling used tractors through ebay is a great option. eBay is a reputable service that charges the seller fees, not you.

One great tool in searching for the perfect used tractor is the Used Tractor Price Guide. This 328-page book has comprehensive information about virtually all of the farm tractors that were built from 1939 to 2003. The Used Tractor Price Guide details forty-four different tractor manufacturers and will probably cover just about any tractor you end up looking at. This price guide is an invaluable tool that will allow you to decide if a seller is charging too much for a particular tractor.

Look and see where the tractor is located. If you find one that is within driving distance of your farm, ask the seller if you can come and look at it. A hands-on inspection is worth its weight in gold. Used tractors that look beat up have probably not been cared for properly. Check out the axles for signs of leaking seals. Seals tend to be expensive to replace, and this will just be another cost to consider. Inspect the engine for any signs of repair or damage. Most used tractors will probably have signs of engine repairs; it’s inevitable for any machinery. You need to make any repairs made are not sloppy-sloppy repairs tend to mean that you will just have to have the engine repaired again soon. If the tractor has two pedals, make sure that both pedals actually work. Also, you want a tractor that has a wide front end, rather than a narrow one. Tractors with narrow front ends tend to easily roll over on hills, causing injury or even death.

All in all, if you are in the market for a tractor, your best option is to go for a used tractor. Used tractors can get the job done just as well as a new one, but you need to be careful about what one you buy. The used tractors at Save on Farm Machinery are some of the most well-cared-for used tractors you will find.

Collect Antique Farm Tractors

The mid-western United States has been home to many community and local "threshing shows" for a good number of years. However, the interest in collecting and refurbishing antique farm tractors didn’t begin to prosper until the 1980’s. People who were interested in antique farm tractors began to form clubs and started to have yearly demonstrations for the general public. This in turn, sparked even more interest and generated more devoted followers of antique farm tractors and antique farm equipment.

Each collector, of course, had their own special brand or make of farm tractor that they were particularly interested in and they focused their collections around these makes. For example, a collector could be a devotee of Farmall tractors and only collect and refurbish antique Farmall tractors. Another person may be interested only in Massey-Harris tractors or John Deere tractors. National organizations began to evolve devoted to the different makes or brands of farm tractors, i.e., an organization devoted to just John Deere collectors and an organization devoted entirely to antique Ford tractor collectors.

And, in turn, the earliest magazines and newsletters were devoted to a particular make of the prime builders of farm tractors. Consequently, the magazine named Wild Harvest was devoted to Massey-Harris tractors and farm equipment, Green magazine and Two Cylinder magazine were all about John Deere tractors and Red Power was devoted to International Harvester farm equipment. Neglected in the magazines of the antique farm tractors were the equipment produced by the varied smaller farm equipment companies. In addition, no regular, formal clubs were created for the lovers of the farm tractors constructed by the smaller manufacturers.

No matter what brand or make of tractor you are interested in, there are plenty of other people interested in the same thing and what better way to find a part of your youth than to collect the farm tractor of your childhood.

Farm Tractor Store A Gardeners Paradise

If you have a large backyard with a huge lawn and you are sick of pushing that old mower across it week after week it maybe time for a visit to a farm tractor store near you.

If you thought that a ride on mower was beyond your means perhaps it’s worth taking another look before you go back to all that back breaking hard work and trudging across the lawn. Compared with the cost of a large mower a ride on or tractor mower could represent a huge overall saving in both money and more importantly your valuable time. Of course the best place to get an idea on cost and what’s best for you is the farm tractor store or a ride on mower specialist company. These guys know mowers and lawns inside out so they will be able to advise you as to what best suits your needs but more importantly your budget too. Everyone thinks that they are an expert but what may be ideal for your neighbor may not necessarily be ideal for your specific requirements. A good farm tractor store or mower dealer will probably want to come and take a good look at your lawn before making any recommendations at all so don’t go diving in before you take some expert advice.

A small garden tractor will have many more uses than just pulling the mower over your lawn too because a good one will come with many attachments to pull or drive other small agricultural appliances too. Everything from small garden trailers to rotavators can be hooked up to these sophisticated little workhorses so choose with care if you are wanting to get the maximum use out of yours. With the busy lives we lead today time is probably one of the most precious commodities we have so you won’t want to spend all your spare hours in the garden. This is where automation can be a real benefit if you don’t want to spend all and every summer weekend sorting out your backyard and trying to get that old mower running. There are far better things to do in the garden like having a barbecue with your friends and family or just relaxing on a warm summers afternoon whilst you recharge your batteries after a long week at work. So if you get your garden equipment choices right the first time around you really could save all that time for the things you want to do instead.

If you can’t find a good farm tractor store or mower shop near you there are plenty online and many of them will be more than happy to offer some free advice especially if they think there could be a sale at the end of the day. You don’t need to be a brain surgeon to operate a modern ride on mower but it’s always a good idea to obtain some instruction from the guy at the store before you jump on and ride off into the sunset. In fact most reputable farm tractor and mower stores will offer a free demonstration if you ask them for one. These little machines may not be fast but don’t let that fool you they are very powerful indeed and should therefore be treated with the utmost respect especially in regard to the manufacturers usage instructions. All machinery has the potential to be dangerous and at times lethal in the wrong hands so don’t allow children to treat them as toys or use them whilst unsupervised either. With proper instruction and safe usage anyone with a modicum of common sense should be able to tackle even the biggest of lawns out there with no problems at all.

Buying a used or secondhand mini tractor is another option but one you should consider very carefully before deciding upon. Many of the more reputable farm tractor store and mower shops will often stock a good selection of secondhand equipment of all kinds. These garden appliances will have been totally reconditioned in their own workshops and this will of course be reflected in the price. Warranty or guarantee should come as standard but it will however be limited to a far shorter time period than any comparable new machinery that does the same job. There is a strong argument that the price savings on secondhand verses new garden tractors or mowers is not all that realistic when offset against the shorter warranty and lower initial value. Then again needs drive as the devil must and for some folks the price of that new tractor or appliance is just a little more than their budget will run to for that first ride on machine. Whatever you decide take your time when choosing and be sure to visit a farm tractor store or two before making a final decision.

The vintage tractors are ve fef ry much a temptation for the first time tractor owners. The old tractors cost a lot less than the newer tractors to tax.

How to buy a tractor and get a good deal

Most tractors have two cylinder engines, up to 23 horsepower for the bigger machines. Antique Garden Tractors are not for a fenced-in yard because their decks will never get past the standard 36 inch gate. These heavy duty machines are perfect for lots with two or more acres to mow. Antique Garden Tractors are machines after all! Proper care must be taken while operating the system, to keep ourselves safe and our good investment safe as well.

Antique Garden Tractors are generally capable of mounting other implements such as harrows, cultivators, sweepers, rollers and dozer-blades. Like ride-on mowers, antique garden tractors generally have a horizontally-mounted engine with a belt -drive to a transaxle -type transmission (usually of 4- or 5-speeds, although some my also have two-speed reduction gearboxes. Antique Garden Tractors are like full-sized pickup trucks. The wheels and tires are larger, the ground clearance is greater and the frame and front axle are heavier.

Antique Garden Tractors are excluded. Tractors per 1000 Hectares of Cropland are calculated by WRI by dividing the number of tractors in use by the total hectares of arable and permanent cropland. Antique Garden Tractors aren’t cheap, but well worth the investment. You will pay between $1,500 and $3,000 depending on the model you purchase. Antique Garden Tractors are usually designed primarily for cutting grass being fitted with horizontal rotary cutting blades. The distinction between a garden tractor and a ride-on lawnmower is often hard to make- generally antique garden tractors are more sturdily built, with stronger steel frames, axles and transmissions.

These antique Tractors are not fitted with ROPSs, although they, too, can overturn on steep terrain or with faulty loading. An important safety feature on any tractor is a PTO guard, designed to prevent clothing or hair from catching on the turning shaft. Antique Garden Tractors are primarily mowing machines, powered by ten to twenty horsepower air-cooled gas engines, although a few are available with diesel power. The larger models have hydraulic rockshafts, auxiliary hydraulics for snow blades and throwers.

Antique Garden Tractors are just small tractors. Most people find it very relaxing and rewarding to restore and collect these made in America small tractors. Antique Garden Tractors are versatile pieces of equipment. It can do a slew of jobs as mowing, tilling, lawn rolling, lamppost hole digging, and many other jobs.

Each collector, of course, had their own special brand or make of old farm tractor that they were particularly interested in and they focused their collections around these makes.

When you are considering buying a tractor, there are several tips that you should take into consideration. First, ensure that you check the front axle hub seals before buying the tractor. Grime and dirt can get into this area and rupture the seals. If you spot a line of rust in the bolts from the centre to the outer rims, this can mean that the front wheel hubs will crack. The centre sometimes cracks where it meets the rims. This may cause a slow puncture in tubeless rims.

Also, check the battery terminals for rust or corrosion. Corroded or rusted connections can cause havoc to the electrical components in the tractor. You should also be on the look out for leaks in the turbo. The seals can be broken and they are expensive to replace. Try to fire the engine in order to know its condition.

When looking for vintage tractors for sale, be on the look out for wear and splits in the fan belt. Check also the fan bearings. Vintage tractors with air conditioning have a compressor running in the fan belt set-up. The compressor has a clutch system that engages the pulley when the air-con is switched on. If you run the engine and the air-con is on, the pulley should engage and if it does not, there is a possibility that the clutch is knackered.

It is common for the power steering unit of antique farm tractors for sale to be loosely vibrating and leaking. If these are present in antique farm tractors for sale, they can damage the steering motor. Examine the rear of the vintage tractors such as wear on the hook and play in the lift arm. This will give an indication on the work carried out by the tractor. Check for leaks under the back of the cab and oil leaks around the hydraulic couplings. The switch-back pick-up switch may be damaged due to operator misuse. As the hitch is lowered, it may swing back and out from the back of the tractor.

The key fitted to the hooks that lock the pick-up hitch can wear out and the hooks may become loose on the shaft. Check for any hook wear by shaking the hooks when the hitch is lowered. If the key is worn out, the cable will not release the hitch to be lowered.

One final thing when looking for vintage tractors for sale is to take the vintage tractors for a road test. It is wise to try every gear in the tractor to make sure they are working correctly. Check the dashboard for any error codes and run in the different modes to ensure it is selecting both ranges with ease. Check the four-wheel drive and diff lock to know whether they are selecting and disengaging when requested. It is also wise to test the seat to ensure it is functioning correctly since you may be using the tractor for nearly the whole day in the field. There are many places for tractor supply, so ensure that you do thorough investigations before buying vintage and antique farm tractors.

Although it seems that modern tractors have been a part of our landscape forever, the truth is, there are still plenty of antique tractors, that can be found everywhere, and you don’ need to look in museums, either!

Antique tractors represent a beloved past time of restoration and even of use to the people who enjoy them, and you’ll soon see that there are a wide variety of tractors that you can see on a fairly regular basis.

You’ll find that there are plenty of antique tractors, including those from Farmall, Allis Chalmers, Ford and of course John Deere, that are still in service. If you have ever been curious about antique tractors, there is a lot of good information out there.

There are many different types of used John Deere tractors for sale. The different types include the compact utility, row-crop, specialty, utility, four-wheel drive, and track tractors. If you cannot afford a new tractor you might consider looking through antique tractors to find what you are looking for. You can get an old John Deere up and running for a very low start up costs.

The compact utility used John Deere tractors can be driven by anyone. They are really easy to use. You can mow up to 7 acres with these, till almost 4 acres, and lift up to almost 1300 pounds. You can even dig with the 16-inch bucket attached to it down to a little over 6 feet deep in the ground.

There are many antique farm tractors for sale you might consider for rowing crops. It is important you think about horsepower when you think about this type of a tractor. If you are going to use it you need to be sure it is for the type of farm for you. You should be sure it is fuel efficient for your farm size also.

A four-wheel drive John Deere tractors for sale are for the rougher terrain and the extra wet and muddy irrigating you might need to do on your farm. You cannot afford to get stuck in the middle of the farm. This will take time away from getting the crops going. Time is money and a four wheel drive tractor may be your best option for rainy days or soil that is often real moist and difficult to maneuver through.

If you are looking for smaller antique tractors for sale or small John Deere tractors for sale you might consider the specialty tractors. Usually a specialty tractor is used for things like a nursery and a greenhouse. They are not designed to be used out on the farm and you would run out of gas before you got very far if you tried.

The antique specialty tractors are designed with an excellent turning radius, an oscillating front axle, and a diesel engine. These can also run on the biodiesel fuels. You can take advantage of four-wheel drive with these smaller tractors also. They can lift over 1000 pounds and you have perfect visibility without a blind spot anywhere.

The utility antique farm tractors are the tractors that allow you to get the most work done on your farm the fastest. This can include mowing up to 40 acres, tilling approximately 15 acres, lifting over 4,000 pounds, and digging almost 10 feet deep with a 40 inch bucket. You can even bale up to 60 acres with the utility used John Deere tractors for sale. Another excellent feature of these tractors is that they include a cab if you want one. This allows you to continue working when the weather conditions are bad. You can take advantage of tinted windows in the cab so you don’t get sunburned or just to stay out of the rain but keep the work going. The cabs can be removed if you want to work with it off.

If you are looking for old John Deere tractors for sale for your farm it is a good choice. You can take advantage of saving on the high gas prices by switching over to biodiesel. Be sure the vintage tractors for sale you consider at least have a John Deere engine in them. There are many different types of tractors you can take advantage of for use on your farm.

How To Buy Your First Vintage Tractor

Because you are reading this article, then its obvious that you have an interest in vintage tractors. Maintaining, collecting and refurbishing vintage tractors from days gone by has become extremely popular recently. There are numerous reasons for this; firstly they are relatively low-cost to invest in, and look after and sometimes they cost less than the road tax on a new tractor. Also, they are still of use when it comes to doing work. They are simple and understandable. Each tractor has its own history and can be restored to bring pride and a great deal of enjoyment to the restorer. But how do you know how to buy the right tractor and how do you go about it?

Antique tractors come in many shapes and sizes. , you should understand your needs as this will determine what you look for. You first need to know your needs you then need to convert this into a list of requirements this will then enable you to make a better decision when it comes to buying your antique tractor.

Depending on whether you need an antique tractor for your farm or you are intending to begin restoring as a hobby you will choose different machines. Many people will tell you that some of the most sought after vintage tractors make poor day to day tractors and on the flip-side painstaking restoration of an very popular tractor may not be worth the effort (not to mention the cost of that perfect original paint mix).

No matter which type of tractor you are looking for, you should always start your search with some detailed research. Many research books are available that have this information giving you endless details about any tractor model you wish.

While collect ability, , hitch system, etc make up the criteria for choosing what size, type, manufacturer, or model of vintage tractor you want, a more straight forward set of factors must be used for selecting the specific tractor you will purchase. As always, restoring an antique collectible tractor will have a completely different list of criteria.

Antique Tractors Bought for Working

Those that need a machine for working their farm are in a better position to get what they need quickly but it is amazing how many people buy the wrong type of tractor and become disillusioned with old machines. One of the frst things you should look at is the layout of your fields, how hilly is it and also what type of farm machinery you will need to use. If you plan on using the tractor for tillage, such as barley or corn, then you should consider a Nuffield M4, a Nuffield 1060 because other machines may be too low to the ground and cause damage to your crop. On the other hand if your land is mountainous, you may need to consider something like a Massey Ferguson 35X or a Massey Ferguson 168 Orchard Tractor . If you are going to use machinery, you should first understand the horsepower requirements of this implement and make sure the tractor you select has the right weight and the correct horsepower to do the job. If, for example you will be using a ten foot disk harrow, then you will need more power than a Fordson N Thorough basic research will ensure that you don’t make these basic mistakes.

Once you have selected your model, don’t pay much attention to the look of the tractor, the basic mechanics of the tractor should be the first thing you focus on.. Many good day to day tractors will not have seen paint in years and will have been patched up and mended with a range of strange materials.

Make sure that your tractor performs all the basic tasks properly, so check the steering, gears, forward and reverse, PTO, lift, lights, indicators and hydraulics. Even if you plan to work on it straight off, you may not be interested in a complete restoration for sometime and need to keep to a minimum the number of initial jobs. You should have a detailed check list which included at a minimum the following: does it start easily from cold, run well when hot, all the electrical components work well, does it have good traction If possible you should go to your test armed with a toolbox containing a compression tester, expensive Fluke digital multimeter, hydrometer, and other specialty tools. or bring somebody with you who has these tools.. If you are not lucky enough to have access to these tools, as many dont then don’t panic. You should in this case rely on your own common sense and your own observation skills.

However, having said this, you should still be armed with the a basic knowledge on the operation of the tractor you are planing to buy. You should, at a minimum beg, borrow or steal a copy of the owners manual for the particular model of tractor you are planning to inspect so you are familiar with its operation and basic specs and what to look out for.

Here is a basic checklist which you can use with any vintage tractor:

Does it start easily? - A tractor that starts easily may rule out several items in one go Good Battery, compression, ignition wiring / magneto, tune up, fuel flow, Carburetor can be assured (not guaranteed) by this. If it doesn’t start easily from cold, it still may be a good machine but you will have to spend some time and money on it. One thing you should be watch out for is if the tractor is out and warmed up when you arrived, you lose an important checklist item, namely the cold start, because as we all know a warm engine starts much more easily then a cold one..

How does it run when warm - Getting it hot is a must if you want to find out how it will work after you plowed the first row. There are simple and complex problems that can cause the tractor to run poorly after it warms up. You should run it for al least half an hour. After running look for leaks, antifreeze and both oil. Then, shut it down and see how it starts up again.

Are the brakes working well - Although relatively inexpensive to replace, they are difficult to get at on many tractors and will require extensive teardown to get the new ones in. You can test the brakes by locking one wheel and cranking the steering to that side. The tractor should spin and the wheel should not rotate, do this for both wheels.

Does it generate a lot of - like rings, pistons, or valve guides. Black or white smoke can oftentimes be sorted out with carburetion or ignition changes but still represent work.

Does it make clunking noises from inside the engine - A simple ticking from the top of the engine may be a simple valve adjustment but a deep thunk from the bottom or middle of the engine would indicate very serious and expensive repairs. The clunk should be more pronounced under load conditions. This may be a sign of problems with the crankshaft, bearings, or piston rods. And mean a very expensive repair job.

What condition is the oil in - After you have run it for a while, turn off the engine and check the oil for foaming or presence of water. This is a big problem.
Is there head leaks - look for signs that oil are seeping out the head gasket. If the tractor is encrusted with grease and dirt, it may cover obvious signs of seepage.

Is the clutch working well - a clutch is not that costly to fix but splitting the tractor in half is beyond what most collectors want to do.
Check the Dynamo - There should be a little charge indicated on the ammeter as the engine is turning over and a change in the charging level when the lights are switched on (this shows that the resistor or regulator switch and cutout is working fine). At normal running speed, no release should be displayed.

Work the hydraulics - Check the full range of the power rams by extending them with a load. Let the load stand in the hold situation for a period to be sure that there is no breakdown. Chattering noises from the pump while lifting indicate the pump is not getting enough flow of hydraulic oil. The pump may have experienced excessive wear when run this way for long periods of time and may be ready to fail.

Look for structural cracks - It takes a bit of time but it is well spent. Look for hairline cracks in all the steel components. While not expensive to repair, it’s just another time consuming job. In addition it means that your tractor can not be used until this problem is fixed..
IF initially the tractor fails some of these areas, you may be able to knock down the price (since you found all the problems). At this point you must determine if you have the time to correct what you discovered… and make savings. If your tractor needs are time-critical, run a mile from this tractor.

The best option for buying a working tractor is either to buy one that is still in use (but the owner needs to upgrade) or from a reputable dealer. The first category is commonly someone just like you who needs a tractor on a day to day basis. These transactions are usually enjoyable and can even spark a long term friendship that goes beyond the buyer/seller aspect. This type of person will probably even let you try the machine with on your farm and tell you all those things they would repair if they were keeping the tractor.

Buying from dealers can also be a good idea but even at a dealer you should be armed with your evaluation criteria rather than relying on "the warranty". Even if your dealer includes warranties, hauling a tractor back for even free repairs will list you a lot of time and effort. Also remember that the dealer is there to make a profit for his business and may not have your best interests at heart. So buyer beware!

While many of the above experiences may sound a bit negative, you should do your background research and understand the particular issues a tractor may have before you invest.
